Diversity and Inclusion(D&I) are very important at today’s workplace. It may have supporters from all quarters in many organizations , some doubting Thomas’s in some and may be the cautious middle path takers in a few. The bottom line is that it is an idea whose time has come.Having a well defined D&I approach has a direct positive impact on most businesses today and if some business don’t see the obvious impact today am sure they will in times to come .To state the obvious about the importance of women oriented D&I practices –worldwide women are the key decisions makers for consumer good, health care etc and to succeed in a crowded market place isn’t it better if you understand the mind of the customer and what better if you have a healthy mix of both men and women employees at all levels in the organization to design solutions for the end customer .D&I can have many areas of focus based on the nature of the business and location of the business .Whilst in India the common D&I agenda seems to be around Gen Y and women .There are other diverse groups like people with Asia Pacific origin, Afro Americans , Native Americans , LGBT, War veterans etc who influence the way large transnationals and MNCs work .
When we started our women’s group at MSD with a very serious agenda about 2 years back there were times when a group of women chatting in the office for an ordinary work related conversation would invite humorous remarks – Oh the women’s group at work you should be careful about what you say Or worse a women’s social get together … Hmmm .We said that time at least it gives us publicity and any publicity is good for a fledgling in today’s age and time .We have come a long way since ..with the obvious help of all colleagues in the organization ..
